The “El Obrador” Restoration Workshop and Exhibit at +Arte, led by Nicolas Saavedra, was funded by the United States Embassy and executed by the Benjamín Carrión Institute. A devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in November 2017 destroyed 296 pieces from the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Jama’s collection. In April 2016, these archaeological pieces were transported from Manabí to the “El Obrador” Workshop-Laboratory for the Restoration and Research of Works of Art in Quito. Over four months, a team of Ecuadorian restorers and the Benjamín Carrión Institute meticulously restored and inventoried the artifacts, which are significant to the local pre-Columbian culture. The project was one of 107 selected in Washington to receive the United States Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation. Ambassador Todd Chapman observed the successful restoration processes during his visit to the workshop laboratory.
